Genesis 49:1-32

Jacob’s Prophecy concerning His Sons

49 Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves, so that I may tell you what will happen to you ^(A)in the ^[a]days to come.

²Gather together and listen, sons of Jacob;
Yes, ^(B)listen to Israel your father.

³“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and ^(C)the beginning of my strength,
Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power.
⁴^[b]Uncontrollable as water, you shall not have preeminence,
^(D)Because you went up to your father’s bed;
Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch.

⁵“^(E)Simeon and Levi are brothers;
Their ^[c]swords are implements of violence.
⁶^(F)May my soul not enter into their council;
May my glory not be united with their assembly;
For in their anger they killed ^[d]men,
And in their self-will they lamed ^[e]oxen.
⁷Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce;
And their wrath, for it is cruel.
^(G)I will scatter them in Jacob,
And disperse them among Israel.

⁸“As for you, Judah, your brothers shall praise you;
Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies;
^(H)Your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
⁹Judah is a ^(I)lion’s cub;
From the prey, my son, you have gone up.
^(J)He ^[f]crouches, he lies down as a lion,
And as a ^[g]lion, who ^[h]dares to stir him up?
¹⁰^(K)The scepter will not depart from Judah,
Nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
^[i]Until Shiloh comes,
And ^(L)to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
¹¹^(M)He ties his foal to the vine,
And his donkey’s colt to the choice vine;
^(N)He washes his garments in wine,
And his robes in the blood of grapes.
¹²His eyes are ^[j]dull from wine,
And his teeth ^[k]white from milk.

¹³“^(O)Zebulun will reside at the seashore;
And he shall be ^[l]a harbor for ships,
And his flank shall be toward Sidon.

¹⁴“Issachar is a ^[m]strong donkey,
^(P)Lying down between the sheepfolds.
¹⁵When he saw that a resting place was good
And that the land was pleasant,
He bowed his shoulder to carry burdens,
And became a slave at forced labor.

¹⁶“^(Q)Dan shall ^(R)judge his people,
As one of the tribes of Israel.
¹⁷Dan shall be a serpent in the way,
A horned viper in the path,
That bites the horse’s heels,
So that its rider falls backward.
¹⁸^(S)For Your salvation I wait, Lord.

¹⁹“^(T)As for Gad, a band of raiders shall attack him,
But he will attack at their ^[n]heels.

²⁰“^[o]^(U)As for ^(V)Asher, his ^[p]food shall be ^[q]rich,
And he will yield royal delicacies.

²¹“^(W)Naphtali is a doe let loose;
He utters beautiful words.

²²“^(X)Joseph is a fruitful ^[r]branch,
A fruitful ^[s]branch by a spring;
Its ^[t]branches hang over a wall.
²³The archers provoked him,
And shot at him and were hostile toward him;
²⁴But his ^(Y)bow remained ^[u]firm,
And ^[v]^(Z)his arms were agile,
From the hands of the ^(AA)Mighty One of Jacob
(From there is ^(AB)the Shepherd, ^(AC)the Stone of Israel),
²⁵From ^(AD)the God of your father who helps you,
And ^[w]^(AE)by the ^[x]Almighty who blesses you
With ^(AF)blessings of heaven above,
Blessings of the deep that lies beneath,
Blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
²⁶The blessings of your father
Have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors
Up to the ^[y]furthest boundary of ^(AG)the everlasting hills;
May they be on the head of Joseph,
And on the top of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.

²⁷“Benjamin is a ^[z]ravenous wolf;
In the morning he devours the prey,
And in the evening he divides the spoils.”

²⁸All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them ^[aa]when he blessed them. He blessed them, every one ^[ab]with the blessing appropriate to him.

Jacob Dies

²⁹Then he commanded them and said to them, “I am about to be ^(AH)gathered to my people; ^(AI)bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in ^(AJ)the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰in the ^(AK)cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is opposite Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a ^[ac]burial site. ³¹There they buried ^(AL)Abraham and his wife ^(AM)Sarah, there they buried ^(AN)Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and there I buried Leah— ³²the field and the cave that is in it, purchased from the sons of Heth.”

Matthew 27:27-56

Jesus Is Mocked

²⁷^(A)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into ^(B)the ^[a]Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman ^[b]^(C)cohort to Him. ²⁸And they stripped Him and ^(D)put a red ^[c]cloak on Him. ²⁹^(E)And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a ^[d]reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “^(F)Hail, King of the Jews!” ³⁰And ^(G)they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. ³¹^(H)And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

³²^(I)As they were coming out, they found a man of ^(J)Cyrene named Simon, ^[e]whom they compelled to carry His ^[f]cross.

The Crucifixion

³³^(K)And when they came to a place called ^(L)Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, ³⁴^(M)they gave Him ^(N)wine mixed with ^[g]bile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.

³⁵And when they had crucified Him, ^(O)they divided His garments among themselves by casting ^[h]lots. ³⁶And sitting down, they began to ^(P)keep watch over Him there. ³⁷And above His head they put up the charge against Him ^[i]which read, “^(Q)THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

³⁸At that time two ^[j]rebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. ³⁹And those passing by were ^[k]speaking abusively to Him, ^(R)shaking their heads, ⁴⁰and saying, “^(S)You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! ^(T)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” ⁴¹In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, ⁴²“^(U)He saved others; ^[l]He cannot save Himself! ^(V)He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. ⁴³^(W)He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He ^[m]takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴^(X)And the ^[n]rebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.

⁴⁵^(Y)Now from the ^[o]sixth hour darkness ^[p]fell upon all the land until the ^[q]ninth hour. ⁴⁶And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “^(Z)Eli, Eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” ⁴⁷And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” ⁴⁸And ^(AA)immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. ⁴⁹But the rest of them said, “^[r]Let us see if Elijah comes to save Him^[s].” ⁵⁰And Jesus ^(AB)cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. ⁵¹^(AC)And behold, ^(AD)the ^[t]veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and ^(AE)the earth shook and the rocks were split. ⁵²Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the ^[u]saints who had ^(AF)fallen asleep were raised; ⁵³and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered ^(AG)the holy city and appeared to many. ⁵⁴^(AH)Now as for the centurion and those who were with him ^(AI)keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw ^(AJ)the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was ^[v]^(AK)the Son of God!”

⁵⁵^(AL)And many women were there watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while ^(AM)caring for Him. ⁵⁶Among them were ^(AN)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and ^(AO)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

²To the ^[c]^(E)saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ who are at Colossae: ^(F)Grace to you and peace from God our Father.

The Incomparable Christ

¹³^[u]For He rescued us from the ^[v]^(AG)domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of ^[w]^(AH)His beloved Son, ¹⁴^(AI)in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

¹⁵^[x]He is the ^(AJ)image of the ^(AK)invisible God, the ^(AL)firstborn of all creation: ¹⁶for ^[y]^(AM)by Him all things were created, ^(AN)both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether ^(AO)thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—^(AP)all things have been created through Him and for Him. ¹⁷He ^[z]^(AQ)is before all things, and in Him all things ^[aa]hold together. ¹⁸He is also the ^(AR)head of ^(AS)the body, the church; and He is ^(AT)the beginning, ^(AU)the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. ¹⁹For ^[ab]it was ^(AV)the Father’s good pleasure for all ^(AW)the ^[ac]fullness to dwell in Him, ²⁰and through Him to ^(AX)reconcile all things to Himself, ^(AY)whether things on earth or things in ^[ad]heaven, having made ^(AZ)peace through ^(BA)the blood of His cross.
